 The assignment was to paint a human hybrid with either a machine, bug, or animal.

The Thought process here was to make a grotesque man-shotgun hybrid.  The Lack of ears and thick neck were to make it more believable as you'd need a thick neck to have a shotgun on your face and the constant blasting would definitely blow out your eardrums.   The Darleck body was an attempt to make it more machine-like and alien.
